Antique Caucasian soumak rug probably woven in the Kuba vicinity of northeast Azerbaijan in the third quarter of the 19th century. It has an uncommon and attractive design of repeating diamond shapes in soft earthy tones. The visual play between the colors and shapes give fluid 3D impression. A similar piece is published as plate 472 in “Oriental Rugs Volume 1 Caucasian, 1981” by Ian Bennett. Rare and highly collectable. Suitable for wall hanging or use on the floor.
